Secretaries report on Piddinghoe
The trials course is set in a steep sided chalk coombe valley, on the same farm as, and a mile to the south of the 2004 Nationals course. There is a stiff and challenging outrun of 600yd rising about 130ft. The dog is unsighted for most of the left outrun, and for part of the right hand outrun. The sheep were fit and skittish mules in fine condition, and were tricky to handle, just as they were at the Nationals in 2004. Most dogs required streams of commands to find the sheep, and quite a few failed to find them. Most of the dogs followed the irregular fence line along the crest of the left hand valley slopes, and few took a direct route. The right hand outrun initially climbed a steep hill, then dropped to a valley. Few handlers selected this route but most of those that did collected their sheep. The dogs ran much better on day 2, having learned from the previous day´s experience.

The gates were difficult to catch with the sheep bolting off, particularly uphill and penning was extremely also tricky. Only one penned on Day 1, and few succeeded on day 2.

The last run of the day provided the winner on both days´ competition. The clear winner on Day 1 was Philip Davies Russell with LAYLA.. Second place on Day 2 was taken by a very young dog, the 15 month old BILL handled by Eamon Lawless. BILL led the field all day, just being pipped at the post by one point by a superb run by Carol Worgan with KYTE.

The weather varied from warm to hot and several dogs were retired to avoid exhaustion.

Many thanks to the farmer, Peter Carr, and his shepherd Jane Drinkwater for a fantastic venue and excellent sheep.

Four of the handlers, Jane Drinkwater, Jennie Holdsworth, Johann Beeli, and Philip Davies Russell will be competing in the World Trials in Ireland on July 7th and we wish them every success there.
